Fresh off the 1989/90 Scudetto, Napoli’s 1990/91 season became a swing year: they lifted the Supercoppa Italiana in style—5–1 vs Juventus at San Paolo on 1 Sept 1990, with Careca scoring twice—yet finished 8th in Serie A, reached the Coppa Italia semi-finals, and were knocked out of the European Cup by Spartak Moscow on penalties after two 0–0 draws (Baroni missed the decisive kick). In the league, Careca led the club’s scoring with 9 goals (12 in all competitions), anchoring the attack in what proved to be the final Napoli campaign of the Maradona–Careca–Alemão era
