Milan’s 1996/97 season was turbulent. The campaign began under Óscar Tabárez and continued with Arrigo Sacchi from December. Milan exited the Champions League in the group stage after the home defeat to Rosenborg and finished 11th in Serie A. George Weah was the club’s leading scorer (13 in the league, 16 in all competitions), and the year is remembered for his opening-day solo run against Hellas Verona.
