Ronaldo’s “Pirelli” ad most people associate with his 1997 Inter move actually debuted in 1998: the Young & Rubicam “Ronaldo Redeemer” poster, using the line “Power is nothing without control,” a slogan Pirelli had first launched in 1994 with Carl Lewis. A TV version followed in 1999, and the UK rollout drew complaints over its religious imagery, which only amplified the campaign’s notoriety.
