Baresi captained Italy through one of the tournament’s defining stories. He tore a meniscus against Norway in the group stage, underwent urgent surgery, and, astonishingly, returned less than a month later to marshal the back line in the final. For 120 minutes he read everything, front-footed challenges and tidy recoveries keeping Romário and Bebeto scoreless. The shootout was cruel: he missed Italy’s first kick and Brazil lifted the cup, but his performance became shorthand for resilience and defensive craft.
