Mannini, the club’s long-serving right-back, wore 5 in the first years of fixed squad numbers and remained a regular through a transitional season. Sampdoria started under César Luis Menotti and, from 10 November 1997, continued with Vujadin Boškov. The team finished ninth in Serie A. Vincenzo Montella led the league scoring for Samp with 20 goals. The club exited the UEFA Cup in the first round and the Coppa Italia in the round of 16. Mannini’s appearance record for Sampdoria ultimately reached 501, second only to Roberto Mancini, underscoring his status as a mainstay in this era.
