In 1988–89, Roberto Mancini was one of Sampdoria’s key attacking players, making 48 appearances and scoring 14 goals in all competitions: 29 Serie A matches with 9 goals, 11 Coppa Italia games with 5 goals, and 8 European Cup Winners’ Cup appearances. Sampdoria finished 5th in Serie A, won the Coppa Italia by beating Napoli 4–1 on aggregate in the final, and reached the European Cup Winners’ Cup final, where they lost 2–0 to Barcelona in Bern on 10 May 1989. Mancini played mainly as a second striker, forming a decisive partnership with Gianluca Vialli in one of the club’s strongest late-1980s seasons.
