Parma’s defensive platform travelled well: clean rest-defence, centre-backs strong in the duel and full-backs recovering quickly. That base allowed the front two to take risks, knowing the structure behind them was secure.

Already first choice as a teenager, Buffon combined reach and handling with early command of his area. Starting positions were advanced for the time—sweeping behind a high back line—while his set-piece organisation was mature beyond his years. The campaign confirmed him as Serie A’s outstanding young goalkeeper and a fixture in the Azzurri squad.
