Post-Maradona Napoli leaned on creativity up front but leaked goals. Zola and Daniel Fonseca carried the attack - Fonseca famously scored five in one UEFA Cup game vs Valencia - while the back line struggled, producing an uneven domestic campaign.

In his final Napoli season he wore the No. 10, producing double-figure goals across competitions and the blend of tight control, disguise and set-piece craft that soon took him to Parma and then England. Across his Napoli years he reached 32 Serie A goals in 105 league appearances, a haul built as his role grew from understudy to centerpiece.
