O’Neill made 120 league appearances and 12 goals for Cagliari across his spell before moves to Juventus and Perugia, his technique and disguise on the ball drawing unusual peer reverence—Zinédine Zidane repeatedly described him as the most talented player he ever played with. 

O’Neill died on 25 December 2022 in Montevideo, aged 49, after complications related to chronic liver disease.
