Some colours become part of a club’s identity without ever officially belonging to it. For Manchester United, blue is one of them. Despite many of their greatest moments coming in red or white or even green and gold, blue is something they're capable of rolling out and it feeling part of the club's palette.
For 2026/27, adidas have returned to royal blue for an away shirt that reaches back to one of the most distinctive designs in the club’s history. The reference is clear: the blue adidas shirt worn between 1988 and 1990, complete with red and white detailing, the Trefoil on the chest and that unmistakably late-Eighties feel.
It came from a very different Manchester United. Before the trophies arrived in waves, before the club became football’s great commercial machine, Sir Alex Ferguson was still laying the foundations. Bryan Robson, Mark Hughes and Brian McClair wore the original during a period when United were becoming something, even if nobody yet knew exactly what.
Blue would return again and again over the decades that followed. Beckham wore it. Giggs wore it. Scholes wore it. Cristiano Ronaldo wore it too, during one of the most dominant periods in the club’s modern history. It became attached to different eras, different teams and different versions of Manchester United. Even ones that had to settle for the Europa League.
It gives this shirt its weight. United have experimented with black, green and almost everything in between, but blue has always felt different. Familiar without being traditional, we suppose.
The 2026/27 version understands that. The Trefoil returns, the shape feels modern and a subtle wave pattern runs through the fabric in tribute to the River Irwell beside Old Trafford. It's a shirt looking backwards without getting stuck there. We suspect it might prove rather popular this summer.
